A Succinct Outline Concerning True Disciples of Jesus

Sermon Outline regarding the definitions, marks, costs, and blessings of discipleship.

Taken from Executable Outlines

You don't really need to hear your pastor preach this. The outline is so clear and
compelling that it should move any true Christian to repentance and action.

I. THE DEFINITION OF A DISCIPLE

   A. THE WORD "DISCIPLE"...
      1. The word "disciple" literally means A LEARNER
      2. According to Vine's Expository Dictionary Of New Testament
Words, it denotes "one who follows another's teaching"
      3. But a disciple was not only a learner, he was also AN ADHERENT
      4. For this reason disciples were spoken of as IMITATORS of their
         teachers.

   B. THE GOAL IN BEING A DISCIPLE...
      1. Stated by Jesus himself: to be like the teacher - Lk 6:40
      2. To be Christ's disciple, then, is to strive to be like Him!
      3. According to the apostle Paul, this coincides with God's goal
in the redemption of mankind, that they be conformed to the
image of His Son - Ro 8:29

[Do you have a strong desire to follow Jesus and become like Him?
Unless you do, it cannot be said that you are truly His disciple!

There are also some "identifying marks" of discipleship given by Jesus
which can help us to further identify a true disciple of Jesus...]

II. THE MARKS OF A DISCIPLE

   A. A DISCIPLE IS "ONE WHO ABIDES IN JESUS' WORDS" - Jn 8:31
      1. This would imply being a diligent student of the teachings of
         Christ
      2. It also requires one to be a "doer" of the Word - Mt 7:21-27;
         Jm 1:21-25
      3. In view of this, a true disciple would not...
         a. Fail to study the Bible diligently
         b. Willingly refrain from opportunities to study with others
(e.g., Bible classes, church services, gospel meetings).

   B. A DISCIPLE IS ALSO "ONE WHO LOVES THE BRETHREN" - Jn 13:34-35
      1. With a love patterned after the love of Jesus ("as I have
         loved you")
      2. With a love that is visible to the world ("by this all will
         know")
      3. Therefore, a true disciple would...
         a. Make every effort to get to know his brethren
         b. Take advantage of occasions to encourage and grow closer to
them (e.g., attending services on Sunday and Wednesday
            nights)
      4. Remember, a disciple is one who wants to become like his
         teacher
         a. Was Jesus willing to sacrifice time and effort for His
            brethren?
         b. Of course, and so will we... IF we are truly HIS disciples!

   C. A DISCIPLE IS "ONE WHO BEARS MUCH FRUIT" - Jn 15:8
      1. Notice the word "much" (also found in verse 5)
         a. Jesus is not talking about an occasional good deed
         b. But a lifestyle which prompts people to glorify God!
            - Mt 5:16
      2. This is so important, that failure to bear much fruit will
result in being severed from Christ - Jn 15:1-2
      3. How can one be a disciple if he or she is cut off from Christ?

[The point should be clear: to be a disciple of Jesus Christ means
more that just a casual church member. It requires COMMITMENT,
especially in regards to:

                    The teachings of Christ
                    The love of brethren
Bearing fruit to the glory of God

The kind of commitment involved is seen further when we consider the
"high cost" of discipleship demanded by Jesus in Lk 14:25-33...]

III. THE COST OF BEING A DISCIPLE

   A. JESUS MUST COME FIRST - Lk 14:26
      1. Before anyone else, including members of our own family
         - Mt 10:34-37
      2. Even before one's own self - Lk 9:23-25

   B. WE MUST BE WILLING TO SUFFER FOR CHRIST - Lk 14:27
      1. Trying to live godly lives in an ungodly world, we may find
that following Christ sometimes involves ridicule and
         persecution - 2Ti 3:12
      2. Even if we are blessed to escape such things, we must still be
willing to expend time and effort in promoting the cause of
         Christ in positive ways

   C. PUTTING IT SIMPLY, WE MUST FORSAKE ALL TO FOLLOW CHRIST
      - Lk 14:33
      1. In other words, Jesus must be KING and LORD of our lives
      2. Nothing can take precedent over Him and His Will for us

[This kind of "high cost" of discipleship demanded by Jesus caused
many people to turn away from following Him. But Jesus wasn't trying
to attract large crowds, He wanted disciples!

Is the COST worth it? I believe so, for consider some of the REWARDS
of discipleship...]

IV. THE REWARDS OF BEING A DISCIPLE

   A. THERE IS THE PROMISE OF "FUTURE BLESSINGS"...
      1. We shall be saved from the wrath of God which is yet to come
upon the world for its sins - Ro 5:9
      2. We can look forward with joyful anticipation of eternity with
God, free from sorrow, pain and death - Re 21:1-8

   B. THERE ARE ALSO "PRESENT BLESSINGS"...
      1. Jesus offers a PEACE the world cannot give to calm the
         troubled heart - Jn 14:27
      2. His words inspire JOY to lift our spirits out of any
         depression - Jn 15:11
      3. He also offers to those who follow Him the ABIDING LOVE OF
GOD, which can cast out fear - Jn 15:9; 1Jn 4:18
      4. And he makes it possible for us to be members of THE FAMILY OF
GOD, which is able if need be to replace our physical family
         - Mk 10:28-30

Become a True Disciple, then Go and Make Disciples

Jesus was very clear about disciples. Is His church getting this right?

Oswald chambers said in My Utmost for His Highest for April 24:
“We have a commercialized view—we count how many souls have been saved and sanctified, we thank God, and then we think everything is all right.  Yet our work only begins where God’s grace has laid the foundation.  Our work is not to save souls, but to disciple them.  Salvation and sanctification are the work of God’s sovereign grace, and our work as His disciples is to disciple others’ lives until they are totally yielded to God.  One life totally devoted to God is of more value to Him than one hundred lives which have been simply awakened by His Spirit.  As workers for God, we must reproduce our own kind spiritually, and those lives will be God’s testimony to us as His workers.  God brings us up to a standard of life through His grace, and we are responsible for reproducing that standard in others.” (emphasis added).
One goal in writing God Called - He Needs Your Decision was to provide a pathway, even a recipe, for moving from pew duster to disciple, from lukewarm to on fire, from prodigal to servant in the Father's house, or from mature dutiful soldier to fully surrendered child of God. From the early reports of those who've given me feedback, there is a unanimous chorus of conviction leading to change. See reviews here and here.

The other goal was to share with everyone that it is Okay to hear from God. Bill O'Reilly created shocked headlines when he declared that the Holy Spirit gives him the ideas for his books, including Killing Jesus. I have heard from the Holy Spirit on several occasions including through visions and the "still small voice." The experiences are documented in the book along with clear directions for how to discern truth when the experience is extraordinary. There is also a section on how to avoid allowing experiences like that from becoming idols. But, the bottom line is that we need to be open to hearing from God, even if through a donkey.

From God Called - He Needs Your Decision!

-->
Disciples give up everything
These texts make it clear that to be a disciple one must:
·                 Obey everything that Jesus taught
·                 Hate his relatives (by comparison to his love for Christ)
·                 Carry Christ’s Cross
·                 Give up everything
That certainly leaves me out. What about you? On the other hand, I’m not certain that Jesus intended for us to have achieved all of those things before we can be disciples. I do believe he intends for to make a clear decision that we want to do these things, and that we will be available to do these things when called.
If we review the lives of both Old and New Testament saints, they did not give up everything every day or every week. Rather, they were available to give up whatever was necessary to respond to God’s call. They were learning how to do those four things.
Jesus spent three years training the Twelve virtually full time how to be disciples. One could argue that even our seminaries spend more time on theology and counseling than they do on developing disciples. In order to “create disciples” so that there will be enough workers to gather the abundant harvest, the church may need to become much more proactive about specifically doing the necessary work to equip willing followers to be disciples.
To be a disciple seems almost impossible, not to mention difficult. But we are promised blessings and that our yolk will be light. I pray that if you choose to read and act based on this short book, that your blessings will be inspirational and transformational for you and those you touch.

Almost Nothing About Book Marketing Is the Same as it was 20 Years Ago

God Called - He Needs Your Decision! Now on Kindle

I launch a book and learn new stuff

Last week I was excited to launch my 8th book over the course of 35 or so years. My long tenure has put me in the position of having now done almost everything possible in the book biz, except for a text book. I tried pretty hard to get When Friday Isn't Payday and the updated version Running a 21st Century Business into the classroom, but the hill was steep (like a cliff), and the reward wasn't worth it at the time.

But I have:

  • Sold books through a local small publisher into a niche market - bicycle retail stores
  • Sold a major book to a major publisher for wide distribution - business books noted above through Warner Business Books
  • Used a New York Literary Agent to sell a book. Same books
  • Used a smallish national publisher in the Christian market - A Generation Betrayed - Its Time to End the Sexual Revolution
  • Self published a niche book for $50 each
  • And now, I am self publishing a Christian market theology book on Kindle, Amazon print, and audio.
Did I miss anything?

If you are a Christian who wants to take your faith to the next level, please check out my new book: God Called - He Needs Your Decision!

So how does all of this tie into our business blog? Book selling is another business. And the marketing of books is very instructive for other types of business. After creating the product, which requires the better part of a year, and an investment in the mid four figures, you now need to let folks know you have a product they might want to buy. As with any product or service today that might be free (blogs, videos, website, FB, Twitter, radio interviews, TV, etc) or have a cost (print advertising, booth space, online ads, and sometimes the use of a publicist.)

Covers (packaging) were always a critical issue, but in a book store the customer might only see the spine. Spine art and color is even a science. Now, the book cover is critical and must be very bold in a thumbnail size so that the title and mood are clear and readable.

Like any business in today's market, but even more so, the potential for sales is driven by reviews. Getting folks to read it and review favorably prior to and during launch can make or break a book. Yes, you can have another round of promotions, months or even years into a book, assuming it doesn't have an expiration date (due to timeliness issues), but the initial launch is where you have the best chance to build excitement. I have participated in numerous grand openings, and I always suggest spending as much as possible to get that early visibility.

What about success rate? Generally, I would speculate that it is about the same as Amway. Most authors have no stomach for marketing or speaking, and the real money is made selling the book after giving a talk (which often includes an honorarium to boot). Most authors become very discouraged after the first book doesn't do well, and don't create that string of books in the same market that establish the author's brand and build audience.

I am somewhat of a freak in the business. I don't write for money. I do know how to market. I have written in 4 distinct genre's, and I have had 80% success in terms of either making money or helping folks with the message. I'm not sure I would recommend my approach, other than to go into the book business with no expectations of making money on the books...ever. Then recognize that the only hope of doing so is luck or very hard work. OH! Once again, it sounds just like any other small business.

Forgiving As a Discipline - Ch 6C

Can You Hear from God if You Are Harboring Unforgiveness

There are several themes that form the central tenets of the Bible:  Love, redemption, justice, grace, good and evil, and of course, forgiveness.  God establishes the principle of forgiveness by modeling it often in His own actions, then making it a core principle of what Jesus called His followers to practice.

God, thru Jesus, placed a very high value on forgiveness.  When we say the “Lord’s Prayer,” we stop with Matt 6:13.  It would seem that possibly the next verse would be very important to be praying daily, too:

14. For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

From this verse it would appear obvious that God wanted to make absolutely clear the importance of forgiveness.  Certainly the theme is picked up again and again throughout the New Testament, and the same intensity can be seen in the parable of the unforgiving servant.

This was the part of 6th chapter in a book that has been created here on this blog.  The book will be available on Amazon.com April 26 under the title God Called - He Needs Your Decision!  This will be the Kindle edition.  The print edition will follow approximately May 15, and the audio is slated for availability around June 1.

Serious Disciples of Jesus should read God Called - He Needs Your Decision!  because, according to one reviewer:

If a baby were born and failed to thrive, the family would rightly consider it a great tragedy. When a Christian is born and fails to thrive, however, many people don’t notice. God Called—He Needs Your Decision! by Randy Kirk is an invitation to Christians to thrive. It is a spiritual counterattack to the widespread misconception that “being” a Christian is a passive state. Randy invites Christians to “do” Christianity.

God Called was written specifically for mature Christians who feel they have not really heard the Lord speak to them. These Christians truly want to hear the voice of God calling to them with an offer to serve in a capacity that is outside of their expectations.

Review these questions which might be holding you back from hearing God’s plan for your life:

Jesus says disciples need to carry their cross and follow Him.  Can you do that?
Jesus said that disciples must hate mother and father (compared to Him)  Is that you?
Jesus said that disciples must obey what he has commanded.  Do you?
Jesus said that disciples must give up everything.  Are you prepared to do so?
Dallas Willard says “very few Christians want to hear what God has to say.  Do you?

Here’s a sample of the impactful words from God Called that have encouraged readers to take their Christianity to the next level:

Our Christian walk is always about how much we trust and believe, and whether we trust God enough to put aside our fear. Each stage of our maturing in Christ depends on our ability to repent of our unbelief, or pride, and our idols, and move to the next stage. This is true from our first profession of faith. It is true when we start each new discipline. It is true when we become aware of the depths of our sin and mindful of our need to be continually repenting. It is true when we become willing to be completely dependent on and open with God—intimate with Him. Then we must repent of our unbelief again if we are to fully surrender to a calling.

Chapter 6B – Fasting as a Christian Discipline

“When You Fast” not If

In the spirit of transparency, I feel the need to express the following.  I understand that many others have come before and will come after who are more qualified and often better equipped to teach the specific subjects in this work.  My hope is to reach those who might find this book early in their walk, or who don’t do a lot of reading, or who are in exactly the right place to be motivated to hear from God in a mighty way.  Possibly my synopsis of each element in this journey might help someone to springboard to a more complete work on the subject.

Why do I bring that up at this point?  Because one of my heroes of the faith has written so completely and beautifully on fasting that I find it hard to even start this chapter.  Dr. Bill Bright has been motivating me for years.  His dedication to God is a standard we can all look towards.  Among the multiplied other contributions that he made, he began a movement for fasting, including leading entire churches to go on 40-day fasts.

Dr. Bright wrote at least four books on fasting which you may find on Amazon or at other booksellers.  So if my words inspire you to fast, you might want to read one of those four books or at least refer to his free online short course.

Jesus told His disciples that some things only come out by prayer and fasting. Mark 9:29.  In Matt 6:16 He said “When you fast...”  Not if you fast.  And yet the church today seems to think that fasting isn’t important.

This was part of the 6th chapter in a book that has been created here on this blog. This section has been radically altered in the final version  The book will be available on Amazon.com April 26 under the title God Called - He Needs Your Decision!  This will be the Kindle edition.  The print edition will follow approximately May 15, and the audio is slated for availability around
June 1.

Christian Discipline and Hearing the Voice of God - Chapter 5 b

https://www.hissongevangelism.org/ministry/about.php

Wisdom Means Sitting Under Gifted Teachers and Wise Counselors

God Commands Us to Sit Under Wise Teachers and for Some To Be Teachers

Now part of the church experience includes sitting under wise teachers, or having the gift of teaching.  It seems that God didn’t think his Bible was all we would need to work out our Christian lives.  Priests, judges, prophets, teachers, preachers, elders, apostles are just some of the job titles of teachers that God appoints to help us to greater understanding of His Word.

But, if you’re anything like me, I hated school, even though I loved learning.  Maybe you aren’t like me and you loved school, but learning wasn’t high on your list of fun things to do.  Either way, God has made it abundantly clear that we need teachers.

This is part of the 5th chapter in a book that has been created here on this blog.  The book will be available on Amazon.com April 26 under the title God Called - He Needs Your Decision!  This will be the Kindle edition.  The print edition will follow approximately May 15, and the audio is slated for availability around June 1.

The rest of this chapter was available free for almost a year, but has now been removed.  It is my hope that you will truly enjoy the book and that it will bless you.  Some have already reported their thoughts about the book.  Early readers report below.

You’ve made the decision to trust God, follow Jesus, and be indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

But those are only the first decisions that God allows his followers to make.  The Christian experience is a process of making one decision after another.  We make choices about:
    loving God and others
    participating in Christian disciplines
seeking God’s direction in our daily lives
    being on fire or lukewarm
desiring to hear God’s specific calling on our life
opening our heart to actually hear from God
    surrendering

Where are you in the decision process? Do you need a jump start? Here’s what others said:

“I started attending church again after reading God Called  JS

“I read the first few chapters of God Called but couldn’t go on.  Too convicting” TB

“After reading half of God Called, I started making big changes.” CC

Even as a Pastor sometimes we can lose focus on what it really is to be a
true disciple of Christ.

I would recommend it to any Pastor or leader of a church

Death, Heaven, and Hell

Turned 62 earlier this week.  Kind of hard not to think, from time-to-time, about death.  I'd like to ask my Mom (84 in 6 weeks) what she's thinking about death, or maybe some of the older folks in my church.  But I feel uncomfortable bringing the subject up.  Why is that?  As far as I can tell, nobody ever talks about death.

We don't talk very much about heaven.  Even in the church.  I suspect that's because we have so many goodies here on earth that the prospect of heaven no longer offers much tangible benefit.  Sure, no more tears.  Sure, we get to meet Jesus.  But in an age of plenty and toys that are so cool we couldn't have imagined them even ten years ago, one needs a very good imagination to think of how things will be even more exciting in heaven.

I actually think about heaven.  I read Randy Alcorn's book on Heaven, and I've read numerous other books and parts of books on the subject.  I'm totally confident that heaven is going to be amazing in every possible way, and beyond anything we could imagine in our wildest dreams.  But, I don't wake up heavenly minded.

A close friend at church lost her Dad last week.  She does not have the assurance that he knew Jesus.  In fact, if he did, it would have been a foxhole confession in the last week of his life.  But what about hell.  If we don't talk or think about death or heaven very much, we sure don't talk about hell.  No more pastors talking about hell and damnation.  Can't go there.  Too tough.  People might leave.  Hmmm.

Day - 5 - Christian Discipline: Appreciating the Father in Heaven

Getting up early is not an issue.  I generally wake up before six, and can probably back that down to 5:30 without any difficulty.  I stretched my back, but I'm not ready to work out yet.  I am ready to pray.

When I was in the disciplined mode the last time, I found that using the Lord's prayer as an outline for my time with the Lord was a huge help.  At our church, we are currently studying this very thing.  The teaching that had inspired this approach last time was Could You Not Tarry One Hour?: Learning the Joy of Praying by Larry Lea.  I should probably reread this classic.

What have I learned already on this first morning of getting up out of bed and going to a prayer place to study and pray?  That I am a sinner.  My name should be "selfish."

Like every human being, I am a child of a parent.  Like most, I am a parent to a child.  As I contemplated these roles this morning I found that I am a better parent than I am a child.  Sacrificial, unconditional love comes pretty naturally with regard to your kids.  They are helpless, needy, and you can clearly know that you are responsible for their life.  For most parents I suspect there is plenty of selflessness in their parenting.  One thought I had as I prayed:  how much of our willingness to sacrifice for our kids is based on the fact that we can play god in their lives.

But the more telling time for me this morning was my recognition that after my parents sacrificed so much for me, shouldn't I be willing, even anxious to return to favor.  Shouldn't our thankfulness for their huge contribution to who we are result in an outpouring of devotion to them, rather than a begrudging sense of duty to call or visit from time-to-time.

Of course we are busy.  Hugely busy raising our own kids, working for a living.  We have other responsibilities to spouses, friends, siblings, brothers and sisters in Christ, hobbies, and God.  Taking an hour a week for Mom and even less for Dad is about all that we can honestly spare.  Let's see.  50 hours a year for the 30 years that you and they are both adults.  1500 hours.  They spent that in the first year of your life.

Maybe an hour a week is enough.  Or two or three.  I think the real issue is the begrudging or duty part.  And that's where we get to the God parallel.  Is my hourly time of devotion with my heavenly Daddy going to be a time of duty offered up as a begrudging time when I'd rather be watching TV?  Or getting more sleep in the morning so I can stay up for TV later tonight?

If we believe that God is who He says He is, how can we not want to spend half the day with Him or even more.  The problem should be tearing ourselves away from our time with Him, not finding the time to spend.

Day - 6 - My Daily Chrisitan Discipline Plan

If you checked out my insanity blog just below (and if you didn't you should), I am going the almost full immersion route to try and get myself back on track.  So the title above is correct.  I haven't started yet.  Today is day minus 6.  I am starting on Friday, March 12.  My birthday is the 16th, which might have had some sense to it.  I picked Friday because two of my favorite TV shows end their season this week.

I am winding up (down) toward that day.  More time in prayer this morning.  Only reading Christian literature.  Listening to classic music on the radio, not news.

Stay tuned if you like.  I'll try to remember to post daily.

Humans Are Stupid, Dumb, Even Insane - Repeat Their Mistakes

Definition of Insanity - Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Back pain, I'm happy to report, is rarely an issue for me.  Chronic back pain even less so.  But a few years ago I did tweak my back in such a way that no amount of rest, heat, vibration, or Motrin seemed to get me any closer to relief.  Then one day I was putting away Diet Pepsi cans on the shelf of my fridge, and I decided not to baby my back.  Instead, I fully stretched my back with each few cans that I lowered to the bottom shelf.  WaLa!  The next day my back felt great.

Fast forward a couple of years.  The last three weeks (after installing a water heater), my back was not responding to heat, vibration, rest . . . you get the point.  And I have been . . . uhh, babying it.  Has anyone else had a similar experience with their physical issues?

So that those who occasionally stumble across this blog become fully aware of my own insanity, here is a much sadder tale.  In the early '90's I made a decision to seek the face of God through daily devotion and discipline.  I began by immersing myself in the things of God, which by extension, meant divorcing myself from the things of the world.  I stopped listening to news, reading secular magazines or books, and even turned off the TV.

The results couldn't have been better.  For over ten years my experience with the Lord was nothing short of amazing.  My prayer time was not limited to the hour in the morning, but was rather a constant connection during the day.  My ministries soared as I participated in Men's ministry through Promise Keepers, taught adults, sang on the praise team, wrote a book on teen abstinence, did radio and appeared on the Geraldo show.

Amazingly all of these things were easily accomplished while raising four kids and running a medium sized manufacturing business.  Looking back, it seems impossible.  But I have witnesses.  :  )

One would think that a life that blessed would keep even the dumbest guy on track.  One would be wrong.  Having nothing to do with my work for Jesus, the business began to have troubles in the early '90's.  Many decisions that I made to keep the company from folding were not Godly at all.  But even the desperate and inappropriate decisions were not enough to save the business, and it was sold at fire sale in 2007.

While conducting myself in a way I knew was not Biblical, I pulled back from ministry.  How could I minister to others while behaving in a way I would never have counseled them to do.  I was pretty sure that God didn't want to help me out or maybe even have much to do with me.  So my prayer time evaporated.  (Of course, I really just didn't want to hear Him tell me to STOP sinning.)

Well, it's now over two years since I sold the business.   I'm not sinning, but my spiritual life reaches about as far as the ceiling (I know.  It isn't original, but it is exactly how it feels.)  But, reaching back to the parallel story about my aching back.  How smart would I have to be to see that I just need to stretch my spiritual muscles and begin to exercise again.

Are you experiencing anything like this?  Have you fallen into a rut that has a clear answer?  One that has even worked for you before?  But you are plan insane, like me?  I'd love to hear your story.

Christian Discipline

The Life of Discipline Is One Filled With Joy and Productivity

Paul wanted to know why he was continuously doing the things he shouldn’t while failing to do the things he knew he should. This wasn’t any ordinary Paul, but the man who wrote most of the New Testament. Like David and Isaac and Moses and all the other heroes of the Old and New Testament, he was a flawed human being, but he had a heart for God.

As I move relentlessly through this brief but complicated life as a saint who continues to sin, I imagine that I’m not so different from you, dear reader. We don’t want to continue to sin, and we do want to obey Jesus, but we fall so far short of the mark. What I have learned during my sojourn up to this day is that I am the most obedient, the most Holy, the least tempted, the least persuaded, when I am the most immersed.

Paul also compared us to athletes a couple of times. If I really wanted to be a major athlete, a star in some sport, it is pretty clear that the first thing I would need to do would be to work tirelessly and single-mindedly towards that goal. There would be no time to pursue separate efforts in music or history or art. I might have to limit my effort to some degree by demands that I couldn’t avoid like school, raising children, taking care of a spouse, or working to support my self while in training. But to every extent possible, I would spend every other available moment on that sport.

My plan would be simple. Exercise and practice. Develop the skills, knowledge, and muscle memory needed to excel. Work on mental skills like concentration, relaxation, and quick thinking. Participate in competitions to improve handling pressure and understanding the opposition.

Up to here it would seem that we could pretty much substitute success as a Christ follower for success as an athlete. Try it. Go back and reread the whole thing with that change in mind.

Update March 23, 2013

I am updating this blog post almost exactly 8 years after first writing it.  During the course of those 8 years my life was turned upside down.  I lost my business, my wife left me, and as my comedian daughter said, "Dad, you are like a country western song.  Even your old dog died."

My discipline of rising each day and reading God's word, praying to Him, worshiping Him, and Listening to Him, was lost.  I began to take some matters into my own hands that seemed expeditious at the time, but that were clearly sin.  My life continued to spiral out of control.

Where I had generally listened to Christian radio when driving around town, I switched to secular talk shows.  Where I had read the great authors of the Christian world, i now watched TV cop shows or political talking heads.  The discipline went away, and with it the Holiness.  Like an athlete who stopped lifting, running, and listening to his coaches, my Christian walk and witness was nothing like it had been.

I can hear my own voice in talking to Christian friends or family members:  "I know I would be happier, more joyous, more productive, and a better man if I were back to being immersed, but I am frustrated with God for my losses, and I can't get over it."

Thankfully in the past couple of months, God has reached out to me in so many ways.  I have regained the discipline, immersed myself, turned off the TV, switched the channel on the radio, and picked up great Christian writers.  And predictably my life has become more joyous.

Back to the Original Post (with some updates)

That would require quite an effort. You might even say you would have to sacrifice much of your other life to do this. But that kind of discipline would certainly make us more likely to be Christlike, don’t you think.

Here’s the other interesting new thing that has come to mind recently. The athlete certainly wouldn’t do things that were counterproductive to his plan. He wouldn’t work the wrong muscles, he wouldn’t shortcut his sleep, he wouldn’t eat wrong foods, and he wouldn’t drink alcohol.

But pretty much every Christian I know, including this writer, are watching TV programs and movies, listening to music and radio programs, reading magazines and books that are working the wrong muscles, feeding our soul and spirit the wrong food, and acting like intoxicants in our hearts.

I’m not bragging, but I spent about 5 years pretty much 100% immersed in God’s word and the things of God, while avoiding the things of this world. It was a very good 5 years. Now you’ll know I wasn’t bragging, because I stopped this disciplined life and substituted bad food and drink for the body and blood of Jesus. And it showed.

I haven’t given up these habits cold turkey this time, but I am working towards it. Pray for me.

See my update.  It isn't pretty.  3/7/2010.   As noted above, it took another three years to work things out with God and return to a life centered on Him.  Having waffled so badly over this total of almost 15 years between immersion and good discipline to no discipline and only a tangential hold on Christian teaching, I can't begin to explain the difference in my quality of life.  But maybe at some point I will try.

What I do know is this.  God was able to use me when I was available and listening.  Now I believe God is ready to use me again.  I would recommend that you bookmark this blog, subscribe to it, or add it to your RSS feed.  Check out the content added after March 23, 2013.
